What You Need to Know About February 2023 Weekends are Proving Fatal for S.C Motorists

Our David W. Martin Accident & Injury Lawyers in South Carolina review local traffic collision news to help our clients understand that when it comes to car accidents, injuries, and fatalities in The Palmetto State, they are not alone. When negligence is a factor on our roadways, it is not a question of if people are going to get hurt, it is a matter of when.

Unfortunately, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) announced a preliminary number of seven people killed on South Carolina roadways during the weekend of February 3, 2023, through Sunday, February 5, 2023. The following weekend, SCDPS reported eight traffic collision fatalities, and five more crash deaths the weekend of February 17, 2023.

These crashes included:

  • Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said that around 12:40 p.m., a 2018 Toyota pickup was headed east on S.C. Highway 97 near Discovery Road when an unknown car coming up from the west crossed over the center line.

To avoid the collision, troopers say the pickup went off the right side of the road, then lost control. The vehicle then went off the left side of the road and hit a fence, a brick wall, and then another fence. The second car wasn’t found.

The driver and two passengers of the pickup were all taken to an area hospital. The driver was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and later died from his injuries.

  • A driver died from his injuries after a deadly crash on I-85, on Feb. 16 around 10 p.m. on I-85 at the 103-mile marker near Blacksburg.

The lone driver of a 2017 Toyota truck was headed north on I-85 and struck by another vehicle from behind. The driver was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

  • In Charleston, S.C., the Charleston Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) investigated a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle. This collision occurred on February 19, 2023, at 9:40 pm on Savannah Highway near the intersection of Magnolia Road.

A motor vehicle was traveling southbound on Savannah Highway when it struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road before hitting a tree and overturning. The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased on the scene.

  • A motorcyclist was killed on the afternoon of February 19, 2023, in a crash with an SUV on S.C. 170 in Okatie.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened about 4:30 p.m. when Williams, riding a 2018 Kawasaki motorcycle, was traveling east through an intersection on S.C. 170 and hit a 2020 Ford SUV crossing the highway. The accident is under investigation.
